Does Elva PROTEST too much?

TO show her innocence, she swore on what she considers 'a woman's greatest fears'.

That she won't find a boyfriend and won't marry a good person.

And that she will live miserably and be lonely for the rest of her life.

And finally, that she will be conned of all her money.

That's Taiwanese singer Elva Hsiao making an oath on 29 Feb, in a bid to prove to the Taiwanese media that she was not involved in Hong Kong star Edison Chen's sex photo scandal.

She was earlier named as one of the 14 female stars who were once romantically linked to Edison and risked having their obscene photos with him leaked online.

But Elva had already issued a press statement offering to donate NT100 million ($4.5m) to charity if anyone can produce any photos of her, so why the need to make such an oath?

In an interview with The New Paper yesterday, she clarified that she was forced to swear because a newspaper reporter had challenged her to.

'If I didn't (swear), you'd think there's something (between me and Edison), so I could only choose to swear because there's really nothing.'

To her, all the declarations she made are 'a woman's greatest fears'. She said: 'I'm scared of all of them, and I hope they won't happen to me.'

Elva was in Singapore with fellow Taiwanese Jam Hsiao to perform at S-pop Hurray finale, shown live on Channel U last night.

Since she made her declarations, she said that she has gained more people's trust, and she wrote a blog to 'thank them for believing in my innocence'.

As for her earlier million-dollar offer, Elva said the idea came from her manager and lawyer, who wanted to protect her from any malicious effort at tainting her so-far healthy image.

It was also aimed at curbing any more speculation about her, lest it 'blurs the focus' of the release of her new Mandarin album in May.

It has been more than a year since Elva's last comeback album 1087, which marked the number of days she had been away from the music scene.

The much-delayed album was finally released in December 2006, but a ligament tear during a dance practice session forced her to cancel all promotional activities to rest for a few months.

Meeting the Singapore press at Sheraton Towers Hotel, Elva assured fans that her left leg has since recovered fully, and she has learnt to be 'obedient' and not overstrain herself during dancing.

'Health is the most important thing,' she declared. She also promised she will put in more effort at promoting her next album to make up for lost time.

The new CD will include more love ballads than 1087, which had a strong dance-pop slant, as many fans said they missed her ballads.

Included in her list of to-do things this year is to shoot a new movie.

Last seen in a cameo role in Infernal Affairs in 2002, Elva said she is game to try anything as long as she gets a good script and a good director.

'For once, I want to try not being Elva and live in another world for a few months,' she said with a throaty laugh.

One of her recent favourite films is the Hollywood title P.S. I Love You, starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler.

SENTIMENTAL

Elva confessed that she 'kept reaching for tissue' from the moment the leading couple slammed the door on each other, in the beginning of the film.

She said she saw herself in the movie, like how she tends to rely emotionally on her man when it comes to relationships.

'It's not that I need to stick to him every day, but I need to know he's able to give me 100 per cent stability. I don't like to guess or be kept in suspense.

'But I also need my space. I'd be scared if he sticks to me too closely.'

Recently, it was reported in Taiwan's Apple Daily that Elva confessed to losing her ex-boyfriend to her best friend in 2006.

When asked if she will draw inspiration from that failed romance and write songs, she revealed that she already did - in 1087.

She penned the lyrics of four songs and one of them, Lights Off, was about betrayal in love. 'What's passed is already in the past, just leave it behind.
