Elva Takes A Kick in Taekwondo

Elva will be participating in the “Go Olympics! Support Taiwan Sportsmen” concert (前进奥运，中华健儿加油音乐会) on 4 July. To promote the concert, the songstress appeared in a taekwondo suit. Wearing a suit that is one size too big and practicing barefoot made Elva very uncomfortable. She even joked that that she looked like a lump of rice, and the loose outfit made her look more like a female Sumo wrestler than a professional taekwondo contestant.Elva has always believed that she has a very masculine personality, so she is very particular about her dressing. She said that beautiful girls would not want to look like a guy, and showing her toes in front of the reporters made her pretty embarrassed. This is because she would only show off her toes when she’s not in the media spotlight.

“I had learnt wushu previously and I was in the cultural dance group in Primary School. This is my first time learning taekwondo, and I feel so masculine. I’m worried that I would lose my feminieness.” After her practice, she realized that being a taekwondo player is tough and she salutes them. As for the upcoming Olympics, her favourite segment is basketball, diving, athletics and gymnastics. As a short distance sprinter when she was young, Elva won numerous awards in many 100m races and relays.

As a amateur, Elva started learning the basic hand and leg kicking movements, and she was able to master them quickly and accurately, earning praises from the coach: “She’s really talented!” Initially, she was suppose to practice defending a guy who would gave her a hug from behind, but she was so shy that she insisted on changing another attacking position. “I’m not used to having such close contact with guys whom I’m not close with.” Eventually, the coach changed the attack position to a face-to-face attack.

When demonstrating the self-defence stunt, Elva said candidly: “Although learning self-defence is good for your health, I would rather use a pepper spray because I’m too lazy!” She joked that using a pepper spray is fast and effective. Most importantly, she is afraid that with such a small frame, she would be at a losing end when she meets a pervert. Besides, she’s a fast runner, so she could run away from the scene quickly. She also revealed that she had met a pervert who exposed himself when she was on the way home during her high school days, and she pretended not to see anything as it was dark.

The “Go Olympics! Support Taiwan Sportsmen” concert will be held on 4 July at 6 p.m. in Taipei First Sports Stadium. The list of performing artistes include 5566, Xiao Jing Teng, Wilber Pan, Gary Chaw and Richie Ren.
