Elva had lived in Vancouver, Canada during her highschool years. In Vancouver, she enter a local singing contest named New Talent Singing Awards Vancouver Audition 1998, choosing Coco Lee's song 愛我久一點 as her competition piece. However, she only managed a Top 5 position. Eventually, she was poached by her then manager, 姚谦, who signed her as an recording artiste under the Virgin Records Taiwan label.

Initially, she was scheduled to debut as a member of a 3 girl singing group called Phenomenon, but due to conflicting interests that led to the other 2 members leaving the group, Elva was then arranged to release her album as a solo artist.

Elva released her 1st album, 萧亚轩 同名专辑, in 17 November 1999. It was an instant hit in Asia, topping record charts and out selling several established singers. This album shifted 1 million copies in total, escalating Elva to young diva (小天后) status. Her subsequent albums sold more than 1 million each.

In 2001, Elva ventured into the Japanese music market, releasing her album "Elva first", in which she recorded both Chinese and English songs.

In 2002, she successfully held her first mega concert in the prestigious Hong Kong Coliseum, and she is the first Taiwanese singer to ever hold concerts in the Hong Kong Coliseum for 2 consectuive years. Afterwhich she shifted her concert venue back to her homeland, Taiwan, in 2003. The concert was titled Elva 2003 Up2U 台北演唱会. In addition, she also held her concert in Singapore in the same year.

In 2004 Elva ended her 5-year long record deal with Virgin Records Taiwan, sparking rumours of her falling out with her benefactor, 姚谦. She subsequently inked a record deal with Warner Music Taiwan in March 2005.
Just as Elva's music career track was running smoothly, organisation changes in Warner Music Taiwan caused her album to be delayed indefinitely. She briefly ended the contract in early 2006 but after much consideration, she re-chose Warner Music Taiwan as her record company.

In October 2006, Elva released the single, "Elva is Back" as a promotional single to show her fans that she is indeed returning to the music scene.

After waiting for 1087 days, her latest album, 1087, was released on 22 December 2006 to much eager anticipation from her fans.

Unfortunately, before her album was released, while she was filming her music video, 代言人, she injured her leg and all promotional events had to be halted for 1 month.
